PATIENT DAI GETS CHANCE

PRESTON boss Paul Heckingbottom has urged reserve goalkeeper Dai Cornell to stake his claim after Freddie Woodman suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

Woodman, 28, turned his ankle in a gym session during the international break, missed last weekend’s 3-0FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with ligament damage.

“It’s Dai’s turn to step up and he’s been training hard,” said manager Heckingbottom of the 34-year-old Welshman, who has played just five league games since joining from Peterborough in 2022.

“It’s a great opportunity for him. Dai’s great about the place, but this is what you get paid for now, on the grass, so it’ll be good for him.”
