RECRUITMENT RESPONSIBILITY ULTIMATELY LIES WITH STEVE

STEVE Evans rarely fails to get his teams firing but, for some reason, it just hasn’t worked for him at Rotherham.

The Scot won two promotions during his first spell at the club and returned last April, but was sacked last Sunday after winning just 18 of his 50 games in charge.

Steve was backed in the summer. He can’t complain about that. And as someone who has watched a lot of Rotherham this season, I can say with confidence that there’s been no lack of effort. When you’ve got players like Jonson Clarke-Harris and Sam Nombe that’s a given.

But they’ve just been too poor in defence. They aren’t keeping clean sheets and they’re repeatedly making mistakes.

Personally, I doubt that’s down to coaching because Steve knows what he’s doing. But even if you get things consistently right on the training pitch, players can still crumble on a Saturday when the pressure is on.

Rightly, that then begs the question of whether the right sort of characters were brought into the building in the first place -and that is Steve’s responsibility, unfortunately.
