LEAGUE TWO MIDWEEK ROUND-UP

ON-SONG: Morecambe’s Lee Angol celebrates

MORECAMBE’S late bid for survival gathered pace as a 2-0win over Cheltenham lifted the Shrimps to within four points of safety.

Ged Garner scored just seconds after coming off the bench before Lee Angol’s fifth goal in six games gave Derek Adams’ side back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

“We have cut the gap on those above us and that’s all we can ask for,” said Adams. “There were a lot of top performances all round.”

Things are looking increasingly bleak for Carlisle, however. They had Elliot Embleton sent off just 11 minutes after coming on as a first-half sub in their 2-1defeat to Chesterfield. Liam Mandeville and Paddy Madden got the goals for the hosts, with Joe Hugill netting a late consolation.

Elsewhere at the bottom, Accrington lost 4-1to Fleetwood, for whom Phoenix Patterson and Mackenzie Hunt both scored spectacular long-range free-kicks, and Harrogate edged a 3-2thriller in their relegation six-pointer against Tranmere.

Ellis Taylor, Tom Cursons and Ben Fox scored for Town, with Regan Hendry and Omari Patrick netting for the visitors in a game peppered by sensational strikes.

Max Clark’s late penalty cancelled out Jack Payne’s early strike for Colchester to earn Gillingham a fourth straight draw, whilst Barrow v Salford and Newport v Bromley also ended 1-1.

At the top, Danny’s Johnson’s 90th-minute effort rescued a point for faltering leaders Walsall, who drew 2-2with Doncaster to go eight games without a win. Goals from Luke Molyneux and Billy Sharp – either side of Taylor Allen’s equaliser – appeared to have given Donny the win before Johnson’s late intervention.

Port Vale moved level with second-placed Bradford as goals from Lo-rent Tolaj and Mitch Clarke earned a 2-0home victory over the Bantams – whose defeat made it just one win in five outings.

Goals from Chris Long and Mickey Demetriou earned Crewe a massive three points in a 2-0victory over playoff rivals Grimsby, while AFC Wimbledon’s poor form continued as Kabongo Tshimanga netted two stoppage-time penalties to cancel out Marcus Browne’s opener and give Swindon a remarkable 2-1win at the County Ground.

Notts County gained ground on the automatic promotion chasers with a 3-0home win over MK Dons on Wednesday. David McGoldrick, Nick Tsaroulla and Will Jarvis netted.
