Gareth Ainsworth kicks up a storm

There has been much gnashing of teeth in Shrewsbury this week over Gareth Ainsworth’s decision to waltz out of the door and join Gillingham – and it’s easy to understand why.

After all, the Shrews were the ones who gave him a chance in the EFL again after a year out following his flop at QPR.

But how often do we hear the phrase ‘there is no loyalty in football’? The former Wycombe stalwart has decided to do what is best for himself and his family – and has clearly decided that Gillingham represents the better long-term opportunity.

SWITCH: Gareth Ainsworth

At a time when managers are axed with alarming regularity (The Gills have already dispensed with Mark Bonner and John Coleman this term!), it’s difficult to blame someone for choosing to leave when they feel they have a better option on the table.

If, as seems likely, Shrewsbury face Gillingham in League Two next term, Ainsworth can, and no doubt will, expect a spicy reception from the supporters of his old team – if he’s still in charge then, of course.
