EXPERIENCE: Bristol Rovers’ Chris Martin, right

Veteran striker Chris Martin may have kicked his final ball for Bristol Rovers after being ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 36-year-old has been struggling for several weeks with what was initially thought to be a minor knock.

Having missed the 1-0 victory over Huddersfield three weeks ago, the former Scotland international roared back to action by scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Bolton just three days later. However, he sat out the subsequent two games and has now undergone surgery.

“He had an operation,” manager Inigo Calderon told BBC Radio Bristol. “Everything went well with his knee, everything is good now but he’s not going to play

“He was thinking at the beginning it was nothing after he played. After, there was something different. We thought it was going to be something quite quick but it was not like that.

“It was a big blow obviously because of the player. You don’t want a player to be injured and secondly as a coach you don’t want to lose a player like Chris. He was scoring goals but there’s nothing we can do anymore.”

Martin has scored 21 goals in 57 games for the Gas since signing from QPR in 2023 but is out of contract at the end of the season and has not yet been offered a new deal.
