West Bromwich boss Tony Mowbray reckons a fiendishly tight Championship play-off chase will go to the final day.

The Baggies went into the international break lying sixth in the standings after a 1-1 draw with Hull City at the Hawthorns last weekend.

However, they are level on points with seventh-placed Bristol City and just six points ahead of 12th-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

With eight games remaining, it is still all to play for in the Championship play-off race.

Play-off fight goes down to the wire

“We wanted a win over Hull City to open up a gap,” said the 61-year-old, who returned to the Hawthorns for a second spell at the helm in January following the departure of Spaniard Carlos Coberan to La Liga outfit Valencia.

“But it’s now eight games to go and they’re eight big games.

“The crux of it, as it always has been, is to still be in it on the last day when the wheel stops turning.

“It looks like there might be four or five teams within three points of each other at that stage.

“We’ve got something to play for going into the final stretch and you’ve got to look forward confidently to the challenge.

“What will be will be, but we at least want to get to Wembley and give ourselves a chance.”
