OH YES: Hull’s Joe Gelhardt scores in the crucial win against Oxford in midweek

Such was the excitement surrounding Louie Barry’s January loan to Hull City that Joe Gelhardt’s arrival from Leeds United earlier in the month was instantly forgotten.

But, as is often the way with these things, it is Gelhardt who has proved the shrewder acquisition.

Whilst Barry returned to Aston Villa for rehab on a knee injury, loanee Gelhardt had, pre-weekend, scored three goals in 11 games, including a priceless equaliser in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over relegation rivals Oxford United.

Already the clamour to sign the forward on a permanent deal has begun and it is a move that would make sense for all parties.

Since joining Leeds from Wigan Athletic in 2020, the 22-year-old has never looked remotely close to competing for a regular first-team berth and would be surplus to requirements in the Premier League if the Whites went up.

Hull have lacked a hard-working creator of Gelhardt’s ilk for much of the past two years and, crucially, have the money to make a deal happen.

It feels like a no-brainer.
