ABILITY: James Abankwah

Watford duo James Abankwah and Rocco Vata are hoping to make their debuts for the Republic of Ireland after being called up by manager Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Versatile QPR defender Jimmy Dunne has also been named in a squad for the first time ahead of this week’s Nations League clash with Bulgaria.

Pre-weekend, wideman Vata, 19, had scored three goals in 24 Championship appearances since joining the Hornets from Celtic in the summer.

Abankwah, 21, arrived on loan from sister club Udinese in January and has since become an established member of Tom Cleverley’s defence.

“James is an exciting player,” said Hallgrimsson. “He’s been playing really well for Watford. He’s been man of the match in a few games. He’s really impressed us.”

QPR’s Dunne, 27, has emerged as one of the best right-backs in the Championship this term.

Middlesbrough pair Mark Travers and Finn Azaz, Cardiff ’s Callum O’Dowda, Burnley’s Josh Cullen, West Brom winger Mikey Johnston and Preston’s Robbie Brady are also in the squad.

Bristol City have three representatives in the shape of midfielders Mark Sykes and Jason Knight, plus recalled striker Sinclair Armstrong.
