UPBEAT: Danny Rohl

Danny Rohl says today’s Steel City derby at Hillsborough is the first of nine finals for Sheffield Wednesday.

Inconsistent for much of a frustrating campaign, any lingering play-off aspirations appeared to be over after three successive defeats left the Owls languishing in 13th.

But back-to-back away wins at Plymouth Argyle and Norwich City – coupled with defeats for several of the teams above them – have unexpectedly put the top six back within reach.

The German spoke about his side’s play-off hopes as they prepare to face a Sheffield United side locked in a three-way battle with Leeds United and Burnley for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Journey

“We have nine finals now, I want to say this,” said Rohl.

“We take it step by step and let’s see which direction our journey will go this season.

“I think we have sent a signal by beating Norwich – two wins in a row and now we hope to do something special on Sunday.

“With our opponent, who has a value of £125m, maybe the pressure is not on us – it’s about them.

“They have to deliver.

“We’re looking forward to being the nasty team, and to create something here, and then you never know… maybe it’s not the last game against them this year.”

Personal glory

Blades striker Tyrese Campbell scored the only goal when Chris Wilder’s side won a cagey encounter 1-0 at Bramall Lane in November but says he would prefer a victory to more personal glory.

“Every time I see a Blades fan they say next time they see me they’ll buy me a drink,” said the 25-year-old.

“I appreciate it and I’ll definitely take some of them up on it!

“It would be lovely to score again but the aim to win is the bigger thing.

“Everyone wants bragging rights and it was very important to us that we got that, especially being at home.

“We’ll aim to do it again on Sunday.”
