‘You ruined it’

Mowbray blast at referee over Neil dismissal

Fuming Tony Mowbray launched a stinging attack on ref Jarred Gillett after his ten-man Sunderland slumped to their heaviest-ever home defeat in the Wear-Tees derby.

Resurgent Middlesbrough earned a thumping 4-0 victory, but it was a red card for Black Cats midfielder Dan Neil on the stroke of half-time at 0-0 that angered Mowbray.

Neil, already booked, was incensed when a challenge on Jack Clarke was not penalised and gesticulated angrily towards Gillett. The Premier League official instantly produced a second yellow card.

“I’m not coming here to bash the referee, but he’s spoiled the spectacle in my opinion,” said Mowbray.
