HARTE’S REMARKS HAVEN’T DONE TEEN TOMMY ANY FAVOURS

TOMMY Watson’s prematurely announced move from Sunderland to Brighton was controversial enough without anybody adding fuel to the fire.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Ian Harte did. The former Republic of Ireland international is the father of Watson’s girlfriend, and reacted to the £10m transfer with a needless dig at Sunderland supporters.

“Don’t worry about some of the fickle fans, they are the experts NOT…. There is a reason why you play professional football and they sit in the stands!” he wrote on X.

To make matters worse, 18-year-old Watson then liked the post before both of them hastily hit delete. By then, it was too late.

Harte, a former Sunderland player, has a long-standing beef with Black Cats fans. As an agent, his attempts to engineer Jack Clarke a move away from Wear-side were perceived as disrespectful, whilst a recent post congratulating Eddie Howe on Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win prompted an angry exchange on social media.

Having opted to leave, winger Watson was always going to be under extra scrutiny for the remainder of the season, and all Harte has done is make the situation ten times worse. He should have known better.
