Hughes 90+4

Ruben Selles praised his Hull City side’s resilience after they secured a crucial win at Sheffield Wednesday with a dramatic late goal.

Charlie Hughes scored four minutes into time added on to steal the win in the dying moments of the game.

The Tigers are now three points clear of the Championship relegation zone with six games left to play.

Wednesday, meanwhile, slipped down to 13th, trailing sixth-placed Bristol City by eight points.

Fight

“It was a difficult game, as we expected,” Selles said.

“We stayed in the game until the very end and then that late action gave us the three points.

“Sometimes you need to fight for those moments, for those little tiny details.

“We need to know that we have a lot of things to improve, but we are also on a path that is leading us to be competitive.

“That’s the main thing for us.

“We need to take care of our business, be competitive, take our chances like today, score the goal, get the three points.

“Sometimes it’s not going to be pretty, but we’ll keep competing.”

Match action

Hull had more of the possession early on, their first chance coming when John Egan had a shot blocked, and Sean McLoughlin, following up, skewed his effort wide.

Kyle Joseph found some space on the left-hand side of Wednesday’s penalty area, and his shot took a deflection wide.

Wednesday’s first chance of the game came shortly before the half-hour mark when Pol Valentin’s cross was met by Josh Windass, who headed wide.

After some good build-up play from Joao Pedro, Joseph fired in a shot that was well saved by Pierce Charles, who was making only his second league appearance.

Second half

Keeper Ivor Pandur came to Hull’s rescue three minutes after the break, saving a close-range effort from Windass, who had connected with a low cross from Marvin Johnson.

Wednesday boss Danny Rohl made a double substitution just after the hour mark, sending on Callum Paterson and Stuart Armstrong in place of Michael Smith and Svante Ingelsson.

After Pedro had a shot charged down, Selles also made a double switch, taking off Joe Gelhardt and Joseph and replacing them with Steven Alzate and Mason Burstow.

Windass fired in a free-kick, which was deflected over the defensive wall but that proved to be his final contribution as he was replaced by Anthony Musaba shortly afterward.

Akin Famewo was also withdrawn, with Dominic Iorfa taking his place.

Hull made a further double substitution with less than ten minutes remaining, bringing on Kasey Palmer and Lincoln Henrique in place of Gustavo Puerta and Abu Kamara.

In the closing stages, Pedro stooped to meet a cross from Lewie Coyle, heading the ball wide.

Shea Charles got through on goal in added time, but under pressure from the chasing Coyle, he saw his low shot comfortably saved by Pandur.

Hughes scored the dramatic winner four minutes into added time, meeting Henrique’s free-kick with a powerful header that went in off a post.

Iorfa had a chance at the other end shortly before the final whistle, but his header was saved by Pandur.
