I WANT TO HELP NEPALESE FOOTBALL TO GROW

BEAUTIFUL: Kathmandu

IT’S a bit different in Nepal. To get to the team hotel before this week’s game, I had to spend 14 minutes in a cable car going 3,000 feet up a mountain! That’s not my idea of fun, believe me, but otherwise I’ve really enjoyed it since I arrived in Kathmandu a fortnight ago.

The people have made me feel very welcome. Kathmandu is a beautiful city.

And the players here at Lalitpur City have been very receptive to what we’re trying to do.

Don’t get me wrong, the grassroots football needs to develop, the facilities too.

There’s a lot of things that, as a coach working in the UK, you’d be thinking ‘No thanks -that’s not for me’.

But as I learned during my time in India, you’ve got to embrace things for what they are and it’s been really humbling to see players working extremely hard to improve.

At the end of the day, that’s why I’ve come in the first place.

There are passionate people here who want to grow the game in Nepal and it’s my job to guide, advise and use everything I’ve learned over the last 40-odd years to help them along the way.
