Caution required in stats happy world…

DROUGHT: Borja Sainz

Used properly, statistics can be insightful and thought-provoking. Used badly, they are empty fluff, totally devoid of meaning.
Two stats from last weekend’s games illustrate the point.
One is that Borja Sainz, the Championship’s leading scorer, had not found the net since November 30.
This is an excellent stat because it tells us several things. Firstly, and most simply, that the Norwich winger is out of form. Secondly, that this season’s crop of Championship strikers are no great shakes. Thirdly, that the golden boot is likely to be won with a very low total.
