Middlesbrough played like a team of strangers in last Wednesday’s defeat to Sheffield United, who dominated to an extent the 3-1 scoreline did not adequately reflect.
But is that any surprise? Boro’s starting XI at Bramall Lane featured four January signings, all of them on loan. A fifth, Morgan Whittaker, a permanent signing from Plymouth, came off the bench.
