Two of League Two’s meanest defences go head-to-head at the SO Legal Stadium on Tuesday, when Barrow host Gillingham.

Only two sides – Mansfield Town and Stockport County – have conceded fewer goals than Barrow to date: the home side have let in just 39 goals in 33 games.

The Gills have conceded the same number of goals in 35 games, giving them the joint-third tightest back line so far this season.

Key to the Bluebirds’ home form has been Paul Farman, who has allowed 1.16 goals past him per 90 minutes, compared to 1.15 for Jake Turner in the opposite net.

Barrow are in bad form in League Two, with one win and a draw from their last six games.

With three wins and two draws over that period, Gillingham’s form is much better – they have taken 11 points from 18, compared to the Bluebirds’ four.

The Gills are seventh in the table after 35 games, of which they have won 16 and drawn six, earning 54 points.

The home team are one place behind the visitors in eighth, with 14 wins and 11 draws putting them on 53 points.

Over the last two years, Barrow and Gillingham have played each other twice. Barrow won one of them and they drew the other.

Their last meeting was on April 1, when Barrow won 2-1 at home.

Barrow’s last match was on February 17, a 5-3 loss against Salford City, with Cole Stockton (two) and Tyrell Warren getting the goals for the Bluebirds.

Gillingham beat Salford City 2-0 last time out, on Saturday, with Shadrach Ogie and Timothee Dieng on the scoresheet.

Tuesday’s match will be refereed by Darren Drysdale, who has taken charge of 10 League Two games so far this season, issuing one red card and booking 37 players. He has awarded five penalties.

The last Gillingham game Drysdale refereed was the 2-1 win at home against Milton Keynes Dons on October 7. He is yet to oversee a match featuring Barrow this season.
