CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who made the EFL teams of the season, but particularly Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt.
As a teenager at Leeds, Mowatt thrilled with his long-range goals and thrived in a role that was custom-made to suit his skills. But as managers changed and styles evolved, Mowatt was left behind.
The roving No.10 role vanished. Versatile wide men replaced attacking midfielders. Mowatt’s technique on the ball remained peerless, but without pace, strength and positional discipline, he did not fit the modern day mould.
